June 14, 2026, at The Beachland Tavern in Cleveland, OH
In the late afternoon of June 14th, a storm rolled into the Cleveland area. It blew in fast, knocking power out in the Cleveland area suburbs. As I drove down Waterloo I passed through a few dead traffic lights, hoping that the venue wouldn’t be the same. I was wrong.
I had originally come across The Toxhards back in 2022 when their viral video, “Aengus, The Prize-Winning Hog” came across my algorithm on YouTube. It featured a man in an inflatable pig suit singing onstage about the titular character. The song jumped between various genres as the pig man beat up a butcher man and belted out his tale. I knew that I needed to see them live if they ever visited Cleveland.
The smaller of the two rooms at Beachland, The Tavern, was packed with people waiting in the barely lit space. The bartenders were still serving without power while the sound crew tried to set up an old generator. Outside on the patio was the lead singer of Pro Skater playing an acoustic guitar and singing “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants. Even though it seemed like power wasn’t coming back anytime soon, both bands seemed ready to put on any sort of acoustic show for everyone who came out that night.
The sound crew were finally able to kick on a generator, which had just enough juice to power some amps for vocals and guitars. Though short but sweet, Pro Skater played a semi-acoustic set to a packed room. Less than five minutes later, the power came back.
After a scramble by The Toxhards to get their gear setup, originally setting up to do what looked like a similar semi-acoustic set, they kicked off a high-octane show. All four members switched roles throughout the set between guitar, bass, banjo, and drums. At one point during “Coffee Song”, Alan Powers gives his bass to a random concert goer and begins to pass out coffee to the crowd that’s been brewing since the beginning of the show. It truly was the perfect mixture of theatrics, talent, and energy.
