Imagine you go to a show and don’t know anything about THIS lineup. I wish I could rediscover these bands for the first time again. I heard of Intervals a long time ago through suggestions on Apple Music while listening to Plini, Animals as Leaders and other progressive instrumental bands. It was high energy, clean, and a lot of notes where the melody isn’t vocalized, it’s guitar-ized.
Hail the Sun was a band that came on as an Apple Music suggestion when I asked it to play “my station.” The song that I heard first was Anti-Eulogy (I Hope You Stay Dead) and halfway through, I asked Siri “who the hell is this!?” I then became obsessed with that whole album, Wake (check it out first, you won’t regret it. Mars Volta Deloused era vibes with a little more aggression.
Makari and Body Thief were both new to me and incredible. The vocal range of Andy Cizek was ridiculous and after the show I found out he’s the vocalist for A Lot Like Birds as well as Monuments and I don't know how I didn’t piece it together. Fantastic stuff and a little more light-hearted than Hail The Sun. Body Thief sounds like they would be a hardcore band but they’re more post-hardcore with more melodic structure and math with some beauty in their chaos. Huge emotional crescendos without feeling cold and catchy without getting old and sacrificing complexity.
